Canine Ear Wash Solution

The following ear wash solution is the best that I have found to heal and/or prevent yeast infections in a dog’s ears. Use this before you have problems!

16 oz. bottle isopropyl alcohol (or witch hazel)
4 tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 drops Gentian Violet 1% Solution

Mix all ingredients in the alcohol bottle & shake. (Shake before every application as the Boric Acid will settle in the solution).

Treatment: Fill ear with solution & massage gently for 30 seconds and wipe with a tissue. Fill a second time and just wipe without massaging. The dog will shake the excess out. Be careful, the Gentian Violet could stain. Use a plastic bottle with a tip or an eye dropper to administer the solution. If you can find a tipped cap that fits the alcohol bottle – perfect!

Treatment
2 times per day for the first 2 weeks
1 time per day for the next 2 weeks
1 time per month thereafter
Substitute the alcohol with witch hazel if your dog has scratched its ears to the point that they are red as the alcohol may have a burning sensation.

All ingredients are available at a pharmacy. The Boric Acid is usually in the First Aid section where you find the alcohol. The Gentian Violet is likely to be behind the pharmacy counter and may not be available at all drug stores.
